Jellyfin

Jellyfin is a free, open-source media server that organizes movies, music, TV shows and live TV and serves them to browsers, TVs, phones and consoles. It transcodes on the fly so a device with limited codec support can still play a file, offers a full API with plugins and themes, and can pull metadata for libraries without a paid service.

Households use it to give every member their own profile and recommendations, and to keep a large collection reachable from anywhere on the home network or over a VPN.

Hosting it on your own hardware means the library and viewing history never leave your home, there is no monthly subscription or per-stream fee, and a backup of the metadata folder restores the setup.
