Home Assistant is an open-source home automation platform that ties sensors, lights, switches, thermostats and media players together under one roof. The control logic runs on your own hardware, the interface supports both a visual editor and YAML configuration, and it connects to a large catalogue of device integrations alongside ESPHome, Matter and Thread support.

Homeowners use it to automate lighting, heating and presence detection, and to expose that state to dashboards, voice assistants and other parts of the stack.

Hosting it yourself means occupancy patterns and device data remain yours, there is nothing to cancel or pay per month, and a restored snapshot brings the whole house back exactly as it was.
