Flarum

Flarum is forum software written in PHP whose core stays deliberately small, covering discussions, posts, users, groups, and notifications, while everything else arrives as an extension. It pairs a clean responsive interface built on Mithril with a JSON:API layer other tools can read and a broad extension catalogue for tags, moderation, and real-time websocket updates.

Communities pick it for support boards, hobby forums, and internal discussion where quick page loads and a tidy admin panel matter.

Hosting it on your own server keeps the member list and conversations in your database, with no per-member fees and no dependence on a hosted forum provider.
